A wanted Iowa City burglary suspect drew attention to himself by walking in the street, then refusing police commands to move to the sidewalk.
Iowa City Police say they noticed 33-year-old James Black of the Modern Manor manufactured housing community walking down the right side of the 400 block of South Dodge Street just after 11am Saturday. They say they told Black to move to the sidewalk, which he did before going back into the street, then jaywalking across Burlington Street and walking on the right side of that road. Black allegedly refused police commands to stop, refused to give them his name and resisted handcuffing.
Black’s ID was discovered in his pocket. That’s when investigators realized he was wanted for failing to appear at his November arraignment on an Attempted 3rd Degree Burglary charge. Last September Black was allegedly found trying to break into an abandoned warehouse on the 2500 block of Highway 6 East. Meth and a meth pipe were allegedly found on his person.
Along with the attempted burglary charge, Black also faces charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance, Interference with Official Acts and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia for the September incident. If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to over three years in prison.
Charges stemming from Saturday’s arrest include Interference With Official Acts, Harassment of a Public Official and a pair of pedestrian violations. If convicted on those charges, he faces up to 25 months behind bars.
