Iowa City man who claimed lost backpack charged with meth possession

An Iowa City man who claimed ownership of a backpack that was turned in to University of Iowa Police lost and found has been arrested after it contained meth.

According to police, 54-year-old Robert Perez of Scott Park Drive arrived at the UIPD on November 5th to claim ownership of a backpack that had been turned into them earlier that morning. The backpack was found by officers to contain his state ID card and cellphone, but also had hypodermic needles and a bag with over 3.7 grams of ice methamphetamine.

Perez admitted ownership of the drug and the needles, and indicated that he was intending to deliver it to someone. The meth was sent to the state lab and tested positive for meth.

A warrant was issued January 13th; Perez was taken into custody early Saturday morning and charged with a Class C Controlled Substance violation. If convicted, he faces up to ten years in prison.
