Trial is scheduled to get underway Tuesday for an Iowa City man accused of attempted murder in an alleged attempted revenge killing case.
40-year-old Tony Watkins of Davis Street is charged with Attempted Murder after he and 42-year-old Tyris Winters of Peoria, Illinois allegedly fired handguns at another man at the Super 8 Motel on Hayden Fry Way in Coralville in April of 2020. Police say the two sought out their victim to confront him about Winters’ son’s death.
Winters’ son, 21-year-old Kejuan Winters of Iowa City, was shot and killed the previous day inside his Broadway Street apartment. The three suspects have all either been found guilty by a jury or reached plea deals.
Winters and Watkins were each initially charged with Attempted Murder. If convicted, they each would have faced a maximum of 25 years in prison.
Winters recently reached a plea deal with prosecutors. Details of the agreement have not been released, although new charges of Going Armed With Intent and Willful Injury Causing Bodily Injury have been added to his and Watkins’ case files.
Winters will be sentenced on January 21st. Watkins is scheduled to appear in Johnson County Court Tuesday morning at 9.
