A Coralville man was taken into custody Thursday morning after allegedly chasing his wife through their trailer with a screwdriver.

Police say the incident occurred at around 8:15 am. 47-year-old Jose Checo Cabral of 2nd Street allegedly believed his live-in wife had taken the key to his car, and an undetermined amount of money. Checo Cabral then reportedly chased the woman through the trailer with a screwdriver, then threw it at her head. He then is accused of hitting his wife on the wrist with his cane, causing a bleeding and bruising injury.

Their son reportedly got involved, intervening in the incident, when Checo Cabal bit him on the right arm and hit him across the back with his cane. Arriving officers saw a mark on the son’s arm and a red mark consistent with the shape of the cane on his shoulder blade.

Checo Cabral has two previous domestic abuse assault convictions from November 2016 in Muscatine County and this past September in Johnson County. He was charged with his third offense, as well as Assault causing bodily injury. If convicted on both counts, Checo Cabral could be sentenced to up to six years in prison. A no-contact order was requested between the man and his wife and son.
