An armed Iowa City assault suspect has been arrested after an early Christmas morning traffic stop in North Liberty.

North Liberty Police say they pulled over a 2009 Dodge Journey being driven by 26-year-old Antonio Perry, who has listed addresses on both Deforest Avenue and Taylor Drive, just after 2:45 Saturday morning on the 400 block of North Stewart Street. A probable cause search of the vehicle turned up a loaded handgun with a round in the chamber under the driver’s seat where Perry was sitting. Two separate baggies containing approximately one gram of marijuana shake were also found on the driver’s side floorboard.

Perry allegedly admitted to smoking marijuana earlier in the night, and had marijuana shake on his person. He’s charged with Person Ineligible to Carry Dangerous Weapons and Possession of a Controlled Substance. If convicted on both charges, he faces a maximum of two years in jail.

Online records show Perry was arrested for Assault Causing Bodily Injury early Thursday morning. Just after 11:45 Wednesday night Perry’s next door neighbor…who also happens to be his cousin…knocked on his door to ask him to move his vehicle out of their shared driveway on the 2200 block of Taylor Drive. He allegedly responded by punching her in the face multiple times, causing a bruise on her temple and a cut on her lip. Perry claimed his cousin slapped him first, but he showed no signs of injury.

If convicted on the assault charge, Perry faces a maximum of one year in jail.
