An armed Cedar Rapids was found in possession of methamphetamine following an Iowa City traffic stop late Friday night.

Johnson County Sheriff’s deputies pulled over a 2003 Chevy S-10 being driven by 45-year-old Al Williams of 18th Street NW on southbound Highway 218 between the Melrose Avenue and Highway 1 exits just before 10pm on Christmas Eve. The truck had a headlight out, and deputies say it committed multiple lane violations.

Williams allegedly showed signs of impairment, and had a firearm underneath him in the driver’s seat. He allegedly admitted the gun was his.

Williams reportedly performed poorly on field sobriety tests and admitted to recently using meth. Records show he has a history of drug convictions. A small baggie of a substance consistent with meth was found on Williams’ person upon his booking into the Johnson County Jail.

Williams is charged with Possession or Carrying of Weapons While Intoxicated, Operating While Intoxicated, Possession of Contraband in a Correctional Facility and Possession of a Controlled Substance – 3rd or Subsequent Offense. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of 12 years in prison.
