An Iowa City assault victim faces charges that he assaulted police, bled on them, and threw cocaine while being transported in an ambulance.
Online records show Iowa City Police were called to Active Endeavors on South Clinton Street at 2:20am on December 5th for a bloody subject who had just been assaulted outside. Arriving officers determined 22-year-old Aaron Canchola of Highway 6 East needed emergency care and an ambulance was dispatched to the scene. Police say Canchola was intoxicated and belligerent, and at one point he put a paramedic in a headlock and began punching him repeatedly. Officers entered the ambulance as Canchola allegedly tried to throw a bag of cocaine on the gurney.
Police say Canchola fought them with kicks and punches and resisted handcuffing. His behavior led to officers and paramedics being covered with his blood.
Police say additional cocaine was found on Canchola’s person after he arrived at the hospital. He was booked into the Johnson County Jail just after noon Friday and charged with two counts of Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations and one count each of Interference with Official Acts and Possession of a Controlled Substance. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of over three years in prison.
