Cedar Rapids Police say one of their officers shot at a suspect who tried to run them down.

According to an early Saturday morning news release, just after 8:30 Friday night a Cedar Rapids Police officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on 32nd St NE. The vehicle refused to stop, and a short chase ensued. The suspect’s vehicle traveled to the end of Center St NE where it currently dead-ends due to road construction. When the officer exited their car to confront the driver, the suspect turned and accelerated toward the officer. The suspect’s vehicle struck the officer, and in response, the officer discharged their weapon at the car.

The suspect’s vehicle continued away from the scene, stopping at the end of 34th St NE before fleeing the scene. The officer who was struck sustained minor injuries and was treated and released from a local hospital.

The investigation is ongoing. The Officer’s name will not be released until investigators have completed their interview.
