A man who threw a loaded handgun and a bag of crack out of his vehicle while being pulled over by police has been sentenced to federal prison.

KCRG TV reports that 33-year-old Donte Kent of Iowa City pleaded guilty to one count of possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance as a convicted felon, and one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Kent was a passenger involved in a traffic stop in June of 2020. When the officer activated his lights, Kent reportedly threw a loaded Ruger, a bag with 28 individually wrapped quantities of crack cocaine, and a scale out the window.

On Wednesday, Kent was sentenced to 188 months, or over 15 years in prison, with six months of supervised release after he serves his time. The sentences were ordered to be served concurrently; Kent could have faced 308 months, or over 25 years, had they been served consecutively.
