An Iowa City man faces a possible long prison sentence after allegedly firing a weapon in a house filled with six children.

According to police, they were dispatched to a home on the 1800 block of High Street just after 11:15 pm Sunday for a report of a man who had just discharged a firearm inside the residence. The reporting party identified the suspect as 32-year-old Robert Jones and described him as a tall black male with dreads and tattoos on his face, wearing a black coat.

According to police, two females and the reporting party were in the room when Jones pulled a pistol after an argument, allegedly saying “I’m tired of this ess” and fired a round into the wall. Jones reportedly had left the residence after discharging the weapon, a black handgun with a purple grip.

Police located the bullet, which passed through the wall and lodged into the ceiling of a room adjacent to a bedroom where six children were sleeping. No one was injured.

Officers located Jones in the 300 block of Morningside Drive and took him into custody without issue. A search of his person reportedly turned up a baggie of marijuana and a loaded pistol magazine. Officers then employed a K9 to do an article search, and the dog found a pistol matching the description given in the bushes on the 1800 block of Court Street.

The pistol magazine found on Jones matched the gun found in the bushes.

Jones allegedly had the odor of ingested alcohol, had slurred speech and impaired balance. After failing field tests, he agreed to a Datamaster test, showing a blood-alcohol content of .144 percent.

Jones, who lives on Muscatine Avenue, faces a number of charges. They include Dominion or Control of a Firearm by a Felon, six counts of Child Endangerment, Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon, Possession of Weapons while Intoxicated, and 3rd or subsequent Controlled Substance Possession. If convicted on all charges, Jones could be sentenced to over 27 years in prison.
