The early Sunday morning arrest of a Cedar Rapids man by Iowa City Police should serve as a warning to always properly dispose of your prescription medications.
That’s after 32-year-old James Earl Green III of 2nd Avenue SE was reportedly found in possession of multiple prescription pill bottles that did not belong to him. Iowa City Police pulled over Green’s vehicle just after 1:30 Sunday morning in front of the North Dubuque Street Casey’s. Arrest records indicate Green ran a red light and had a taillight out.
A search of Green’s vehicle turned up nine different prescription medications without Green’s name on them. Police say Green admitted he “may” have found the pill bottles while dumpster diving.
Green is charged with Unlawful Possession of a Prescription Drug, Driving While Suspended, Failure to Provide Proof of Financial Liability, and running a red light. If convicted on the drug charge, Green faces a maximum of one year in jail.
Law enforcement officials encourage proper disposal of prescription medications, as the bottles may include personal information. Disposal boxes are available at the Iowa City, Coralville, and University Heights police stations, all local Hy-Vee pharmacies, and at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Residents of Johnson County, Kalona, and Riverside can also safely dispose of medications at the Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center on Hebl Avenue.
