Coralville vehicle fire causes thousands in damage

A Saturday afternoon vehicle fire in Coralville caused thousands in damage.

According to a press release from the Coralville Fire Department, the call came in around 12:30 pm from the 900 block of 23rd Avenue in the city. Arriving crews found flames and heavy smoke coming from an attached garage area of one of the townhouses.

Fire damage was contained to the vehicle in the garage and the garage area, but there was smoke damage throughout the townhouse. It took about 15 minutes to fully extinguish the fire, and firefighters remained on scene until about 2:30 pm.

The occupants were home at the time of the fire; they were alerted by a smoke alarm and got out safely. The Red Cross is assisting the occupants.

The cause of the fire was ruled accidental but is still under investigation. Initial estimates put the damage at around $120,000.

The Coralville FD was assisted on scene by the city’s Police, the Iowa City Fire Department, Johnson County Ambulance Service, Mid-American Energy and the Red Cross.
