A local transient faces charges that he stole a gun and ammunition from an Iowa City residence.
37-year-old Willie Flowers was booked into the Johnson County Jail just before 11:45 Saturday night. Flowers was wanted for allegedly stealing a Taurus G3 9mm pistol, four loaded magazines and several boxes of ammunition from a safe inside a house on Ridge Street the night of July 26th. The alleged victim told investigators that Flowers had stolen the key to the safe from her purse, and that he may have given the gun to a friend with whom he was living in Coralville.
Iowa City Police say Flowers can be heard on a 9-1-1 recording admitting to giving the gun to a man named “John”. The gun was found during a September 8th police search of a residence on the 900 block of 22nd Avenue in Coralville. The apartment was supposed to be vacant, but Flowers was reportedly staying there. Mail with Flowers’ name on it was found inside.
Flowers is charged with Dominion or Control of a Firearm as a Felon and 4th Degree Theft. If convicted on both charges, he faces a maximum of six years in prison.
