Iowa City woman arrested on weapons charges after traffic stop

An Iowa City woman faces weapons charges after allegedly being found intoxicated in the passenger seat of a vehicle stopped for a traffic violation.

Police say 24-year-old Iamani Smith of Davis Street was a passenger in 2003 Chevy Tahoe that was pulled over for a traffic stop Friday just after 11:30 pm. She allegedly did not comply with orders from police officers to exit the vehicle. Smith also reportedly admitting to drinking prior to being in the vehicle, drinking shots at a local bar in the city.

She was observed with bloodshot watery eyes, slurred speech, and showed measurable impairment on field testing.

Smith allegedly possessed a firearm within her reach in the vehicle that she admitted having a permit to carry.

Smith was taken into custody. She was charged with Person Ineligible to carry Dangerous Weapons, Possession of Dangerous Weapon while Intoxicated, and Interference with Official Acts involving a Firearm. If convicted on all counts, Smith faces up to seven years in prison.
