A Coralville man was taken into custody on a warrant stemming from an assault on his pregnant wife.

The incident occurred October 4th as the couple was working for Door Dash. Police were called to The Quarters on Highway Six East in Iowa City on reports of a man who assaulted a female. Officers located the victim at a gas station, and she allegedly had swelling on the left side of her face.

The woman stated that she was involved in a verbal argument with 22-year-old Mark Sanders of 5th Street in Coralville while they were working together. He allegedly became upset when she called him a name and punched her in the face. Sanders’ wife reportedly began to hit back, and he grabbed her face and pulled her over the center console of the vehicle they were riding in. He then allegedly pushed her face down into the seat and bit her on the face.

Upon further questioning, the victim said that they were married for about three months, and she was eight months pregnant.

When police tried to question Sanders, he denied that anything happened between the two and hung up on officers multiple times. After being unable to locate Sanders, a warrant was issued for his arrest. He was booked at the Johnson County Jail just after 2:30 am Sunday. He’s been charged with Domestic Abuse Assault causing Injury, a serious misdemeanor punishable by a jail term of up to one year if convicted.
