A Cedar Rapids man has been taken into custody after allegedly tampering with temporary no-parking signs in downtown Iowa City Thursday night.

Police allegedly saw 19-year-old Jack Stephenson of Vernon Drive Southeast tampering with the signs, which are attached to parking meters to accommodate Friday night’s University of Iowa Homecoming Parade. Stephenson was stopped, and reportedly had bloodshot watery eyes, impaired speech and balance, and had the odor of ingested alcohol.

Stephenson was carrying two empty plastic mugs from Brother’s Bar and was wearing a bar wristband. He could provide no explanation for how he gained entry into a bar while being underage.

Stephenson was arrested for public intoxication, and a search incident to arrest reportedly turned up a fictitious Illinois driver’s license. He was then charged with possession of a fake ID, and now faces up to 13 months in jail if convicted on both counts.
