Area hospitals have started distributing the Pfizer booster to their employees.

The Gazette reports that one of the first hospitals in the state to begin distribution was University of Iowa Health Care, who in an email to its employees said their goal is to “provide an appointment to all UI Health Care employees who wish to receive a booster.” With up to 500 appointments per day, UIHC  believes they’ll complete the first phase within four to six weeks.

Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids began distributing boosters to employees Monday, and spokeswoman Karen Vander Sanden told the newspaper that their on-site vaccination clinic for staff will be open through October 8th.

Other area hospitals are expected to follow suit in the coming weeks.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued guidance last week, recommending the Pfizer booster for people age 65 and older, nursing home residents, and those over 50 with underlying health conditions. They also recommended the booster for front line workers and those whose jobs put them at risk of infection.
