A semi driver was killed in a Sunday afternoon accident on Interstate 80 in Cedar County.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, 65-year-old Robert Swiedals of Clear Lake, Indiana was driving a semi with a tanker westbound just before 1:15pm when he left the roadway just east of the West Liberty exit. The semi crashed into the ditch, and Swiedals was ejected from the vehicle. He was not wearing a seat belt.
Swiedals was airlifted to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, where he later died from his injuries.
The State Patrol’s accident report indicates a hazmat team was required at the scene for cleanup.
Investigators don’t know why Swiedals left the roadway. The accident remains under investigation.
