A University of Iowa student was taken into custody early Friday morning after breaking into an apartment he reportedly believed was his own.

Officers were dispatched to the 300 block of East College Street, after residents of an apartment there called in a report of a man breaking into the apartment.  Upon arrival, police noticed the door to the apartment was busted, and a man was inside slamming the door trying to get it to close.

The man, identified as 19-year-old Evan Koch of Watosa Wisconsin, allegedly had bloodshot watery eyes, slurred speech, and had the odor of ingested alcohol. Police allege Koch believed he was somewhere on Gilbert Street. He was told he was under arrest, and officers attempted to walk him outside to a squad car. Koch reportedly became aggressive and agitated, believing he was at his own apartment despite officer attempts to show him he was not.

Koch is accused of pulling away from officers as they were walking down the stairs and attempting to get away from them. One officer reportedly received a scratch on his forearm during the incident.

Koch refused a PBT and was taken into custody. He’s been charged with 4th degree Criminal Mischief, Public Intoxication. Trespass, and Interference with Official Acts causing Bodily Injury. If convicted on all counts, Koch could be sentenced to up to 25 months in jail.
