Shoulder-checking a police officer is never a good idea, but an Iowa City woman learned early Sunday morning it’s even worse when you’re intoxicated.

Iowa City Police say they were dealing with a suspicious person outside The Fieldhouse on the Ped Mall just after 2am Sunday when 22-year-old Janavia Hammons of Gilbert Court shoulder-checked an officer from behind for no apparent reason. Police say Hammons had no connection to the person being interviewed.

Hammons allegedly showed signs of intoxication, was belligerent with police, and refused to back up and leave the scene when told to do so. Her blood alcohol level was measured at .127%.

Hammons was arrested and charged with Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations, Interference with Official Acts and Public Intoxication. If convicted on all charges, she faces a maximum of 14 months in jail.
