An Iowa City man has been charged with Domestic Abuse Assault for the second time after an incident Thursday.

Police were called to the 200 block of Myrtle Avenue at approximately 2:15 am after a woman was heard screaming for help and telling someone to get off of her. Arriving officers talked to the victim, who stated that she and 25-year-old Tannin O’Connor, whose ID lists him as a resident of Redlands California, got into a verbal argument.

The woman alleges that O’Connor became physically assaultive, grabbing her by the face and throat while pushing her onto the bed. O’Connor reportedly was pushing his hands on her throat while she was on the bed, restricting her breathing. She told officers that she thought she was going to pass out during the incident.

The woman tried to get away from O’Connor, who allegedly told her that he wouldn’t let her leave the apartment.

When interviewed, O’Connor admitted to grabbing the woman’s face but didn’t remember choking her, and didn’t believe he prevented her from leaving the apartment.

The two have reportedly been in an intimate relationship for the past three years.

O’Connor was taken into custody and charged with Domestic Abuse Assault 2nd offense, False Imprisonment and Domestic Abuse Assault impeding Airflow. If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to up to five years in prison.
