A Coralville man has been taken into custody after allegedly taking a woman’s wallet from a common area and attempting to use the credit cards inside.

Police say that 40-year-old Darnell Martin of Holiday Road found the woman’s wallet in the common area of one of the apartment buildings on July 6th around 6pm. The woman told police that the wallet was only worth about $15, but there was $140 in cash, two debit cards and a credit card inside.

20 minutes later, the woman was informed by her bank that her debit cards had been alerted for fraudulent charges at the Finish Line shoe store at Coral Ridge Mall.

The victim also told officers that a neighbor in the building told her that Martin came to her and admitted to taking the wallet and trying to use the cards. The neighbor, who wanted to remain anonymous, provided the victim with Martin’s name and home address.

A review of video footage identified Martin as the man who took the wallet.

A warrant was issued on August 17th, and he was arrested Wednesday afternoon. He’s been charged with 3rd degree Theft and Unauthorized Use of a Credit Card. If convicted, Martin faces up to 4 years in prison.
