Johnson County Sheriff’s deputies have arrested a woman they say was driving with a blood alcohol level almost three times the legal limit with three children in her car.
Officers received a report of a reckless driver on westbound Interstate 80 Friday night. A deputy got behind the suspect’s 2019 Chevy Traverse at 10:15pm near the Oxford exit. He reported that in the few seconds he was behind the vehicle, it swerved all over the roadway and nearly went into a ditch.
A traffic stop was initiated, but the driver stopped in the middle of the fast lane. That driver was identified as 34-year-old Leah Johnson of Crown Point, Indiana. She allegedly performed poorly on field sobriety tests and registered blood alcohol levels of .225% on a portable Breathalyzer test and .221% on a Datamaster. Deputies say Johnson refused to be handcuffed and had to be forced into them, then tried to slip her shackles when in the back of the squad car.
There were three children in the car when Johnson was stopped. She’s charged with Operating While Intoxicated, Interference with Official Acts and three counts of Child Endangerment. If convicted on all charges, she faces a maximum of over seven years in prison.
