An Iowa City man was arrested early Sunday after reportedly assaulting his live-in girlfriend.

Police say the incident occurred just after 4:30 at the couple’s College Street apartment. The victim met with officers in the yard area and said that there was an issue between her and 46-year-old Saul Johnson. During the argument, Johnson allegedly got in her face, and the woman told police she told him to get back, because she was blocked in the bedroom.

Johnson then allegedly slapped her in the face and eventually punched her in the left side of her face. The woman reportedly had a cut to her neck and had a red, swollen cheek.  When interviewed, Johnson stated he didn’t know how any of it happened and allegedly denied touching her.

The woman reported that the two had been living together for a few months and had been together for roughly four years.

Johnson was taken into custody and charged with Domestic Assault causing Injury, a serious misdemeanor punishable by a jail sentence of up to one year if convicted.
