An Iowa City man has been taken into custody after allegedly physically assaulting a woman while she was sleeping.

Police say the incident occurred at an apartment on the 2400 block of Lakeside Drive on July 25th. The victim was sleeping on the couch just before 3:30 am when she was allegedly attacked by 37-year-old Alajuwon Johnson of Taft Avenue. Arrest records indicate that Johnson punched the woman multiple times in the face, dragged her off the couch and across the floor by her hair, pinned her to the ground, and choked her.

The woman said that the strangulation lasted approximately 30 seconds and she was unable to breathe. During the alleged assault, Johnson reportedly told the woman that he was going to kill her. She suffered bumps to her forehead, a swollen right eye, bloodshot eyes and a bloody nose.

A warrant was requested for Johnson’s arrest the next day, and he was booked into the Johnson County Jail Thursday evening. He’s been charged with Assault with intent to Inflict Serious Injury and 1st degree Harassment. If convicted on both counts, Johnson could be sentenced to up to four years in prison.
