US News and World Report’s list of best hospitals still ranks the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics as tops in the state, but saw some of its nationally-ranked specialties drop.

The latest report shows the facility ranked in the top ten in one specialty, ophthalmology. It dropped from 6th last year to 7th this year. The other top-ten ranked specialty last year, ear, nose and throat, dropped from 7th in the nation to 23rd this year.

Other Top 50 specialties also dropped. Gynecology is now 41st after being 34th last year, while the UIHC cancer specialty dropped from 41st last year to 47th on the current list.

The Gazette reports that UIHC earned “high performance” marks in six specialties: pulmonology and lung surgery, orthopedics, urology, gastroenterology and GI surgery, geriatrics, and diabetes and endocrinology.

US News and World Report cites 20 hospitals that excel across most or all types of care. It’s no surprise that the Mayo Clinic is at the top of that list. The rest of the top 5 include the Cleveland Clinic, UCLA Medical Center, Johns Hopkins Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital.
