Gross steps down as West High boys tennis coach

Mitch Gross, who led Iowa City West to eight State Team Tennis Championships (tied with boys soccer coach Brad Stiles for most in West History) is stepping down after 22 seasons and 314 wins as a high school tennis head coach.

Gross came to West in the fall of 2001, taking over a team that had finished 3-12 the previous season and had experienced just one winning season in the past four years. In his first season, Gross turned the program around, going 10-6 and in the process, creating one of the strongest high school sports programs in the state.

In August of 2020, Gross was asked to serve as the interim principal for West High and in March, he was named as the permanent principal of the school.  He previously had taught social studies at West for fifteen years before moving to Northwest Junior high, where he had spent two years as the assistant principal.
Gross plans on remaining involved as a volunteer assistant coach for the boys program and possibly the girls program. A search will be conducted for Gross’ replacement.
