The Iowa Heartlanders hockey franchise announced Gerry Fleming as their first ever head coach Tuesday.

Fleming joins the ECHL affiliate with decades of experience, having recently been assistant coach of Eisbaren Berlin in the D-E-L, the highest level of professional hockey in Germany. They won the league championship this year.

On top of 23 years coaching experience, Fleming had a seven-year career as a player, making it briefly to the NHL when he appeared in 11 games for the Montreal Canadians.

It was also announced that the Heartlanders’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Iowa Wild, will host the first two professional hockey games at XTream Arena. They’ll play two preseason games against the Rockford IceHogs October 7th and 8th. Tickets are available now by going to www.iowaheartlanders.com/tickets or by calling the box office at 319-569-4625.
