An Iowa City man was arrested on domestic abuse assault charges after allegedly trying to keep a woman from calling 911 after an argument turned physical.

According to police, 37-year-old Willie Flowers of Ridge Street was at home with the woman Monday just before 9pm. He’s accused of assaulting the woman while she was packing her belongings after an argument over relationship issues.

The woman told officers that while she was in the basement packing her things, Flowers grabbed her by the neck and applied pressure. She was reportedly able to break free and tried to get upstairs to call 911. As she went up the stairs, Flowers allegedly kept grabbing her from behind and pulled her down the stairs.

The woman had fresh red scratch marks on her chest. Flowers reportedly denied causing any marks to the woman, and allegedly stated that if there were marks on her, they would be from their history of having “peculiar sex.”

Flowers was charged with Domestic Abuse Assault causing Injury, and Domestic Abuse Assault impeding Airflow. If convicted on both counts, he could be sentenced to a maximum three years in jail.
