Leading Iowa City Police on a brief chase on a dirt bike has led to a Colorado man’s arrest.
A caller reported seeing two dirt bikes racing on the sidewalk past the L&M Mighty Shop just after 4am Sunday. An arriving officer observed 22-year-old Elvin Melgar Rivera of Westminster, Colorado driving a green dirt bike on the sidewalk near Dodge and Burlington Streets. The officer activated his lights and sirens, but Melgar Rivera reportedly drove away.
Melgar Rivera led the officer on an approximately two-block chase until he tried to turn too fast and almost wrecked, killing the bike’s engine. Police say Melgar Rivera was furiously trying to restart the bike before he was captured.
Melgar Rivera is charged with Eluding. If convicted he faces a maximum of one year in jail.
