A Coralville man wanted on an attempted murder warrant was taken into custody Monday afternoon.
Police say the incident involved 36-year-old Johnnie Stevenson of the Iowa Lodge on the Coralville Strip. On June 6th just after 1am, he and another man were engaged in a verbal argument that led to mutual shoving. During the argument, Stevenson allegedly pulled out a semi-automatic handgun that he had concealed on his person and fired twice at the victim.
Stevenson has multiple felony convictions, and as such is precluded from possessing a firearm.
A warrant for his arrest was issued June 8th; Stevenson was taken into custody just before 3pm Monday. He’s charged with Attempted Murder and Dominion or Control of a Firearm by a Felon. If convicted on both counts, Stevenson could be sentenced to a maximum of 30 years in prison.
Stevenson also had an outstanding warrant for missing an arraignment on May 24th for an April incident at the downtown Iowa City Panchero’s. In that case, he refused to leave after being asked several times by staff because of his level of intoxication and aggressive behavior. When police cuffed him, he allegedly spat at one of the officers. He reportedly threatened to kill one of the workers, an officer, and the officer’s family. He was charged with1st and 3rd degree harassment, public intoxication, and assault, and faces up to 28 months in prison for that incident.
