A staple of downtown Riverside for over a quarter-century is closing its doors next weekend.

The Murphy’s Bar & Grill Facebook account posted Saturday that the restaurant’s last day will be Sunday, July 25th. The post says, “It was our pleasure to be a part of many celebrations and gatherings of family and friends over the years. Thank you for choosing us! A big thank you to our customers and employees for their support, friendship and loyalty! May you all ‘live long and prosper’!”

The final sentence is a nod to Riverside’s designation as the future birthplace of fictional “Star Trek” captain James T. Kirk. Murphy’s played into the association, declaring itself the spot where Kirk will be conceived in 2227. Following the release of the 2009 Star Trek reboot, which included scenes set in a future Riverside bar called “The Shipyard”, Murphy’s put up a banner declaring itself the “Future home of the Shipyard Bar” in 2258.
