CR firefighters recover body of apparent drowning victim from Cedar River

Authorities have recovered the body of an apparent drowning victim from the Cedar River.

According to a news release from the Cedar Rapids Fire Department, rescue crews were dispatched to the river near the intersection of 1st Street and O Avenue NW just before 5:30 Friday night for a person submerged in the water. Witnesses said a male subject had entered the water for a swim, began to struggle, then went under the water and failed to resurface.

Three search boats and other crews were dispatched, and after an approximately 30-minute search the body of a man in his early 40’s was recovered about 15 feet from the shore in about ten feet of water.

No additional information has been released pending notification of family.
