A transient faces charges that he walked into the Iowa City Walmart barefoot and walked out wearing stolen sandals.

The incident occurred just before 6pm Saturday. Iowa City Police say 30-year-old Benjamin Massey was barefoot when he was dropped off by a bus at Walmart on Highway 1 West. He then allegedly went inside, took a pair of sandals off the shelf and put them on his feet. Police say he then took a pair of Wahl brand hair clippers and accompanying accessories out of the box and stuffed them in his pockets before walking out of the store without paying for any of the items.

Massey was stopped by Walmart loss prevention and allegedly admitted to taking the sandals and clippers.  The total value of the stolen items is $39.81.

Massey is charged with 3rd Degree Theft, an Aggravated Misdemeanor punishable by a maximum of two years in jail.

Police say Massey has previous theft convictions in other states, including New Mexico, Texas and Wyoming.
