An Iowa City man arrested after allegedly hitting another man in the head with a brick now faces charges that he was driving while intoxicated.
51-year-old Michael Richardson of Iowa Avenue was observed by Iowa City Police driving a vehicle that was smoking as he drove on the 700 block of South Riverside Drive just before 12:45 Thursday morning. An officer checked on the car after Richardson parked at the nearby Kum & Go, and noticed an open container of alcohol in the cup holder.
Richardson allegedly ran from the Kum & Go, but returned a short time later. Police say he showed multiple signs of intoxication, admitted to driving, admitted to drinking, and performed poorly on field sobriety tests. Richardson’s blood alcohol content was measured at .092% on a Datamaster test. He was arrested and charged with Operating While Intoxicated and Driving While Suspended.
Richardson was arrested last month after allegedly hitting another man in the head with a brick in the 400 block of South Dodge Street. Police say the incident was unprovoked. Richardson was charged with Assault while Displaying a Dangerous Weapon, an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by a jail term of up to two years, if convicted.
