An Iowa City man has been arrested after his DNA was matched with a sexual assault in the city from 2019.
Police say the incident occurred August 25th. They were called to the area of the Graduate Hotel on reports of a woman who had entered a parked Uber and refused to get out. Upon arrival, they reported the woman was crying, very shaken and upset because she had been sexually assaulted in an alley behind 115 East College Street.
The woman was taken to a local hospital for evidence collection and treatment. DNA was sent to the DCI Crime Lab and the profile of an unknown male was developed.
Investigators eventually developed 34-year-old Juvell Campbell of Davis Street as a suspect. A search warrant was obtained to get a DNA sample from him, and a match was discovered.
Campbell reportedly denied any contact with the victim, especially sexual contact, but authorities say his DNA matched what was taken from the victim.
Campbell was already wanted for a probation violation on Interference with Official Acts and Public Intoxication charges from an incident that occurred just before 2am on March 8th 2020. He allegedly acted aggressively toward officers in the downtown area who were arresting an individual involved in a fight and refused to back off. He reportedly had a blood alcohol reading of .109 percent on a PBT and had to be forced into the back of a squad car after his arrest. He was convicted on the interference charge that July and was given six months probation that was extended to April 2021.
Campbell was arrested Monday afternoon and charged with 3rd degree Sexual Abuse for the 2019 incident, a Class C Felony punishable by a prison sentence of up to ten years if convicted
