Iowa City City Councilor and Mayor Pro-Tem Mazahir Salih has announced she will not seek a second term when her seat comes up for reelection later this year.

KCRG TV reports that Salih made history as the first Sudanese American to hold public office when she was sworn in in 2018.

Salih says she is leaving to become the executive director for the Center for Worker Justice. She says she is backing Sean Harmson, an educator and activist who announced his campaign for the City Council Wednesday afternoon. He is a communication studies professor at Coe College and will run for the District B seat which is being vacated by councilor Susan Mims, who announced earlier this year that she will not seek reelection.
