An Iowa City man faces OWI and weapons charges after police reportedly found him passed out behind the wheel of a running van.

Arrest reports indicate that the incident occurred Saturday morning just before 5:30 on Highway 218 southbound at the 96 mile marker. A Johnson County Deputy Sheriff found 34-year-old Robbie Taylor in the driver’s seat of a running minivan parked on the shoulder. As he approached Taylor, the officer noticed him passed out with a handgun sticking out of his right pocket. The original stop for assistance then turned into a felony stop.

According to the report, the driver’s side window had to be shattered because Taylor wouldn’t wake up to officer commands to put his hands up in the air. It was determined that the 9 millimeter handgun was loaded, and a check of Taylor’s records showed that he had more than one felony conviction.

Once out of the vehicle, Taylor was allegedly observed with bloodshot watery eyes, terrible balance, an odor of ingested alcohol, and was wearing a bar wristband. He performed poorly on field testing and a PBT showed a blood-alcohol content of .202. A Datamaster test showed a result of .205.

Taylor was arrested and charged with his second OWI, Dominion or Control of a Firearm as a Felon, and Carrying Weapons. If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to a maximum nine years in prison.
