A Kalona woman was arrested on OWI charges not once, but twice Sunday.

Shortly before 1:30am, an Iowa City police sergeant observed 18-year-old Delaney Gingerich of 3rd Street operating a 2007 Pontiac near the intersection of Burlington and Linn Streets, and stopped her for a traffic violation. She reportedly exhibited measurable impairment on field sobriety tests. Her behavior was inconsistent with her tested blood-alcohol content of zero.

A drug influence evaluation allegedly determined that Gingerich was under the influence of a CNS Depressant and unable to safely operate a vehicle. She was taken to the Johnson County Jail and charged with OWI first offense. Gingerich was released a few hours later.

Then a little after 6:15am that morning, a friend called authorities advising that Gingerich had just been released from jail for OWI and that she was driving home. An officer found the car in the 2700 block of Highway 1 and observed the vehicle cross the center line, nearly hitting oncoming traffic.

Gingerich was stopped again, and reportedly performed poorly on field tests. She allegedly admitted to taking Xanax.

Gingerich was charged with her second OWI and taken to the Johnson County Jail. She was released at 11am Sunday.
