Iowa City Police conducted dozens of tobacco compliance checks throughout Iowa City Saturday night.

Working with plainclothes officers, underage persons entered the businesses and attempted to illegally purchase the products. Online records show 29 of 30 businesses refused to sell to the underage buyers. Only Liquor Downtown on South Gilbert Street failed the compliance check.

An employee convicted of selling tobacco products to a minor is guilty of a simple misdemeanor, punishable with a $100 fine. Additionally, the violation may result in civil penalties against the tobacco license.
