The mother of a City High student faces charges that she encouraged her son to assault classmates with whom she had been involved in a racially-charged road rage incident.
38-year-old Kimberly Mobley of the Town & Campus Apartments on Arthur Street was booked into the Johnson County Jail just after 10pm Friday. Iowa City Police say Mobley became enraged after an incident in the City High parking lot just after 8:15 Tuesday morning. She allegedly got out of her car, berated a group of City High students, and directed racial epithets at them. She then drove away and picked up her son, who is also a City High student. Mobley allegedly returned to the scene, got out of her car again and she and her son allegedly threatened the group of students with violence. She reportedly told her son to assault the students once they were in school. Most of the interactions were recorded on a cellphone.
Just after 10:30am, Mobley’s son allegedly attacked one of the students in the hallway, giving the victim a concussion. The assault was captured on surveillance video.
Police say rumors circulated throughout City High that the victim had allegedly directed racist language at Mobley’s son during the road rage incident, but the available evidence indicates Mobley was the only person involved using racist language.
Mobley is charged with 2nd Degree Harassment and Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor. If convicted, she faces a maximum of 13 months in jail.
