Allegedly possessing a firearm during a fight on the Ped Mall has led to a Cedar Rapids man’s arrest.

Iowa City Police say 19-year-old Brandin Kiefer of Canyon Street SW was involved in a fight on the 100 block of East College Street just before 2am Saturday. Kiefer allegedly tried to flee from arriving officers, who said he was clearly holding something in his front waist as he ran. Police say Kiefer leaned into a vehicle, appeared to drop something, then continued running. He eventually gave up and was arrested.

A firearm was later found underneath the car where Kiefer had stopped. The gun was loaded, and police determined it had been reported stolen out of Cedar Rapids.

Kiefer has a previous felony conviction for burglary and assault charges out of Linn County from 2018. He’s now charged with Trafficking in Stolen Weapons, Interference with Official Acts with a Firearm, Dominion or Control of a Firearm by a Felon, and Carrying Weapons. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of 17 years in prison.
