A revoked driver from Coralville gambled on not getting caught driving to the Riverside Casino and Golf Resort early Saturday morning, but his luck ran out when his car broke down and a Johnson County Sheriff’s deputy stopped to assist.
The deputy was on routine patrol when he came upon a black 2014 Acura MDX stopped on the side of Sand Road near 480th Street just before 3:45 Saturday morning. The car had its hazards on, and the driver, identified as 29-year-old Jamaal Green of the Iowa Lodge on The Coralville Strip, was still behind the wheel.
Green told the deputy that he was trying to go to the casino and had car trouble. The deputy recognized Green as being a revoked driver, and an Iowa City Police officer was called to the scene for backup.
Green was arrested and charged with Driving While Revoked. If convicted, he faces a maximum of one year in jail.
Online records show Green is currently facing multiple Operating While Intoxicated charges, with his most recent arrest being earlier this week. Iowa City Police contacted Green after he pulled into the Kum & Go on South Riverside Drive just after 2:45 Monday morning. He allegedly showed multiple signs of intoxication. The arrest report described Green as rude, belligerent, argumentative, emotional, and profane. Over the course of his alleged tirades, Green allegedly admitted to drinking prior to driving. As he was placed under arrest, he allegedly refused at least a dozen commands to place his hands behind his back to be cuffed. He was additionally charged with Interference With Official Acts.
