An Iowa City man who fled a traffic stop was picked up by police four days later.

Police say the first incident occurred at 9:30 Saturday night at the East Benton Street DeliMart. 23-year-old Jeremy Haymond of South Governor Street was stopped for failing to obey a traffic signal. When he was found to have no insurance, officers informed him he couldn’t drive his vehicle.

Haymond was given multiple options on how to proceed, but police say he was argumentative and belligerent. He was told that his vehicle was going to be towed, and Haymond re-entered the vehicle, turned the engine on, and fled the scene at a high rate of speed.

Police located Haymond Wednesday just before 12:40am, driving the same vehicle near the intersection of Bowery and Governor. He allegedly denied being Jeremy Haymon, saying his first name was “Richard” instead. He eventually admitted his true identity. When placed under arrest, he attempted to jump his cuffs from the back to the front and had to be stopped. A search subsequent to arrest reportedly turned up a baggie of marijuana in his pants pocket.

Haymond has been charged with marijuana possession, two counts of interference with official acts, and providing false identification. If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to up to fifteen months in jail.
