The Iowa City city council has approved allowing the consumption of alcohol in park shelters.
Tuesday night’s vote means those who reserve shelters in any of the city’s parks and are of legal drinking age can also consume alcoholic beverages inside. City officials say they recently realized that they were the only area city where alcohol consumption by those reserving shelters is prohibited.
The use of alcohol is still prohibited outside of the covered structures, those under the age of 21, or by those without a reservation. City officials say they will deal with those who abuse the privilege or consume outside shelters on park grounds on a case-by-case complaint basis.
It costs about $20 to reserve a shelter for up to five hours for up to twelve people. Longer events and/or those with more people cost more, with some reservations costing as much as $100. For more information go to icgov.org/parksandrec.
