Allegedly cursing and making obscene gestures while stumbling across the street in downtown Iowa City over the weekend led to the arrest of a University of Iowa student on a handful of charges.
According to police, 18-year-old Abel Serrato of Hanover Park Illinois was near the intersection of Dubuque and Iowa streets just after 1:45 am Sunday when they observed him stumbling, shouting curse words and making obscene gestures. Officers activated their lights and siren to stop Serrato, but he allegedly ran for about two blocks while they kept pace with them in their squad car.
Police eventually caught Serrato, but not before two of them suffered lacerations. He allegedly was wearing bar bands, and was in possession of a fake Wisconsin ID showing him to be of legal drinking age.
After reportedly performing poorly on field sobriety tests, Serrato was charged with Public Intoxication, Interference with Official Acts causing Bodily Injury, and Possession of a Fictitious License. If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to a maximum of 25 months in jail.
