The owner of an African business and her landlord have had a small-claims court hearing postponed to give them a chance to come to terms.
The Press-Citizen and Daily Iowan have been following this case, after the Iowa Freedom Riders held a protest outside the Johnson County Courthouse earlier to show support for the business owner, Naa Tackie. She runs NaNa’s African Boutique and Gift Shop; Midwest Development and Investment of Fairfield owns the property on Sturgis Corner Drive. They’ve sued Tackie for failure to pay rent and were trying to evict her. Tackie’s lawyer claimed that Tackie attempted to pay her rent three times but was refused.
Tackie reached out to the Mayor and City Council for assistance but allegedly received no response. That led to social media posts from the Freedom Riders cursing the city’s leadership for ignoring Tackie’s plight.
The Press-Citizen said a joint motion was filed earlier this week to delay the hearing by a month because the two parties were requesting additional time to reach an agreement.
