An Iowa City woman was arrested Wednesday night after a domestic disturbance that allegedly involved her swinging a butcher knife at her live-in boyfriend of three years.

Officers were called to the Town and Campus Apartments on Arthur Street just before 9pm on reports of a disturbance. Police say when they arrived on scene they made contact with both 22-year-old Aliyah Banks and the man. A physical fight reportedly occurred after Banks believed the man was cheating on her. During the altercation, the man suffered several large scratches on his neck, arms and down the side of the back. Police also observed a bite mark on the victim.

When Banks was interviewed, she allegedly admitted to grabbing a butcher knife and swinging it towards her boyfriend. She reportedly stated that she wasn’t injured in the altercation, and that the man did not attack her.

Banks was arrested and charged with Domestic Abuse Assault causing Injury, a serious misdemeanor punishable by a jail term of up to one year if convicted.

The victim requested a no-contact order between himself and Banks.
