A man involved in a fight in downtown Iowa City faces charges that he assaulted a police officer so he could get to another fight.

Iowa City Police say they broke up a fight between 32-year-old Levelle Horne of Clinton and another man near the corner of Clinton Street and Iowa Avenue just before 1am Saturday. An officer identified himself and told Horne and the other man to stop fighting and go home. Horne allegedly ignored the officer’s commands, despite a friend informing him that he should listen to the officer and walk away. The man Horne was fighting did listen to the command and left the scene.

Horne then allegedly took off his sweatshirt, said he didn’t care about the officer’s command, then pushed the officer in the chest as he brushed by him to try to fight another individual.

Police say Horne showed multiple signs of high levels of intoxication. He was arrested and charged with Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations, Public Intoxication, and Disorderly Conduct. If convicted on all charges, Horne faces a maximum of 14 months in jail.
