An Iowa City man was taken into custody after allegedly going after a roommate he suspected of assaulting his girlfriend.
Officers were dispatched to the 2400 block of Catskill Court in Iowa City just after 12:30pm Thursday on reports of a fight in progress between roommates, one of which who was reportedly brandishing a knife. Upon arrival, the two were separated and interviewed individually. 51-year-old William Carter was recorded on audio and video, in an argument with the roommate. He then allegedly brandished a blue-handled kitchen knife, causing the victim to exit the residence by the back door.
The roommate then attempted to re-enter the residence using the front door, but was once again confronted by Carter, who was still holding the knife. The roommate went back outside, followed by Carter.
After he was read his Miranda rights, Carter reportedly admitted to holding the knife but told officers that he didn’t “stick” his roommate with it. He told them he was upset with the man because he suspected him of sexually assaulting his girlfriend several days before.
Carter was taken into custody and charged with Assault while displaying a Dangerous Weapon, an Aggravated Misdemeanor punishable by a jail term of up to two years. A no-contact order was requested by the victim.
